 Tsunami2

expelled onto the cold laboratory floor in a rush of fluids and broken glass, Tsunami se'Marren was given life. a second life, as this incarnation of him was not the first. contingent upon the death of his original self, this clone was made. he knew nothing of who he might have once been, only the sharp discomfort of this fresh existence. language filled his thoughts: words and phrases linked to subliminal pictures and chemically synthesized emotion. something was horrifically wrong! the sensation of doom welled up within his heart and in a state of incoherent fright he cuddled up beside the metal womb he'd just emerged from. cold iron love: he shivered, still damp and partially laying in a puddle of his own amniotic mess. slowly consciousness left him, the exertion of bursting from his machine parent having drained him. dreams filled the confused expanse of his sub-genius mind, flitting images of things he'd never seen or heard before: a face attached to a fiery light, and pain worse than what his birth had brought. unable to glean reference from his limited experience, he shuddered silently and attached himself more closely to the metal mother.

in the morning natural sunlight filtered into the lab from a skylight and he woke to find he'd sprouted foliage. these root/leaf systems began at his knuckles and wound freely about his body as well as eating into the metal mother like lichen.

"awh!"

he tested his voice with a holler, shaken by his own confounding physiology. memories of the subliminal teaching-tapes flooded his wakeful mind, then, and he was shot through with answers. ~*you are a magnificent being, Tsunami*~ a soft, motherly voice had told him perhaps a millions times. ~*half-plant; half mammalian, you are a unique creation... my son*~ pictures of the mother-voice came alongside the gentle whisper... a blue-haired sprite he could reference as not so tall as himself, even. ~*be proud, I send you into this world with nothing but a name, but it is a strong name; a traditional name-sake chosen as my people once did for me: Tsunami. you are the earth that rocks the ocean*~ he couldn't have been more confused. necessary social lessons had also been included, as well as the workings of this lab. stocked in lockers here there were clothes that'd fit him (or anyone, as per their loose but shrinkable design). food! food was kept in a refrigerated locker along with evaporated milk he could hydrate with the water-spout. remembering the water spout he went over to it, tearing himself free of his branches. thirst at this point overwhelmed the pain of breaking away from his supple limbs, which rotted away almost instantaneously. voraciously he thumbed the handle and began sucking directly from the spout itself, locking his lips around the faucet and swallowing cold gulps of the mineral water provided him. the metals that his roots had absorbed provided unbalanced nutrition, though, and soon he broke open the fridge as well. within the cold locker there were non-perishable meals sealed in tin packaging. Tsunami bit through the odd-tasting wrapper and enjoyed his first mouthful of chocolate. oh! the sweet, sweet flavor. this life was turning out to be much better than he'd guessed it would be considering his first day's trial.

luckily, the clothing left for him was modeled onto male mannequins so that he knew how to wear the more... specific... pieces. no great guess about how the pants went on, or that the shirt was to conceal his torso, but the undergarments were initially confusing in their practicality. socks on his hands felt funny, too, but he quashed the silly desire to misuse these garments and put everything right as the example. hopefully, he thought, this was not some joke the blue-haired faerie was playing on him to teach Tsunami humility... he'd have to be careful until he could determine that this was actually how people dressed; to save his fledgling social status any such remarks. the lab had thick iron blast-doors, tooth-and-groove design so that they'd interlock when closed. at first he attempted to open them via the switch panel right up beside the door, but something kept beeping at him and saying: 'please specify another command'.

the wildly colorful foliage he'd sprouted while resting beside the mother-machine ate metal. why not a metal door? Tsunami stood back a few feet from the door and aimed his fist at the odd ring (handle) in the center. by his desire the fibrous tendrils extended once more, violently spooling out from between his knuckles. with these four hook-lines in place he was essentially attached to the blast-door. at first he struggled against the weight of it, skidding all around the smooth-floored lab in an attempt to break it, damage it, or open it however that worked. the design was superior to his current line of thinking, though, and he'd struggled to no avail. being tied to something far heavier than himself, anchored in place, bothered Tsunami to no end... and so he tore loose the hook-ends of his roots and drew them back into himself. checking his hands over, he found that they'd receded without sign of ever being. good-he thought. somehow he just knew that these were not supposed to be constantly visible. more testing with the little panel beside the door earned him another series of beeps, while he was left to guess that the two were not related. the ring at the center of the blast-door might turn like a wheel... but then he was stunned to consider what a wheel even was. how did he know these things? all thanks to the blue-haired sprite and her learning tapes. the answers came to him without effort: his was a sharp learning curve. 'mother', as he'd begun to label the blue faerie, must have cared for him somehow. she would not have locked him in here to eventually starve, now, would she?

Tsunami tried the circular handle and found it turned only clockwise, or as far back counter-clockwise as he'd taken it. resetting it to default, he pondered the meaning of this. closed was where it was. open had to be the way it gave to. he fret that this might not be meant to be opened, but gave over to a sort of childish curiosity. death to the cat proved to be his exit, though: Tsunami cranked the door open and watched sections of it escape into the walls and floor. outside? he smelt fresh air and could feel a breeze, now. what were these things, so completely different than his lab-home? certainly it couldn't be a bad place, though, else mother would have stopped him from leaving the safety of the lab. Tsunami convinced himself of exactly that as he clambered down from the rocky precipice that had served as a sort of landing way after the blast door. down a long stretch of hill-side and eventually towards the forest. there were more people down there he deduced. trails of chimney smoke, roads, and houses did not fit right with the rest of nature. soon he'd be able to test himself at meeting them. he remained wide-eyed and constantly observant; rocks crumbled in his grip as he used the stone-face wall as a ladder.
